Welcome to South Africa’s 680km2 diamond in the rough. As one of the largest, yet lesser known, game reserves, this gem stretches north from the small town of Groot-Marico up to the Botswana border. Madikwe Game Reserve is home to rich biodiversity, including the “Big Five”. A thriving population of 86 mammals, 350 bird species and 104 varieties of trees all exist in a completely malaria-free environment. It also provides the best chance for visitors to see African wild dog. No day visitors are allowed in Madikwe, maintaining exclusivity and allowing for uncrowded game-viewing opportunities. This malaria-free reserve is a perfect couples or family destination, and most lodges provide activities specifically tailored for children, allowing parents to relax and unwind.

Molori Safari Lodge

Small and intimate, Molori is arguably the most exclusive lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve, with just five expansive suites. Located deep in the malaria-free wilderness, it offers breathtaking views over the untamed bush and the distant Dwarsberg Mountains.The individually designed suites feature floor-to-ceiling retractable glass walls, a fireplace and a private deck with a pool and telescope, all thoughtfully distanced from one another to offer absolute privacy.

The food is exquisite, with guests free to dine in the dining room, in their private suite, in the open-air boma or out in the African bush. Of particular note is the game-viewing hide overlooking the Malori waterhole, where guests and budding photographers can get a close-up look at the elephant, buffalo, lion and other wildlife that pop by to drink at the waterhole. There’s also a tranquil spa and excellent junior ranger programme for kids.

Mateya Safari Lodge

The five luxurious thatched suites of Mateya Safari Lodge are beautifully appointed with African artwork and feature mahogany furnishings, a fireplace, sun deck, sala, indoor and outdoor showers and a private infinity pool overlooking a waterhole or the surrounding plains.

In the main lodge you’ll find sumptuous relaxation areas with uninterrupted views over the reserve. There is exquisite artwork throughout the main guest areas, with pieces carefully chosen to capture the essence and vibrancy of Africa. Connoisseurs may also spot several pieces by Dylan Lewis, Africa’s foremost living sculptor.

Feast on gourmet food under a canopy of stars accompanied by an extensive assortment of wines from the lodge’s 8,000-bottle cellar. Join exhilarating Big Five game drives in custom-built 4×4 vehicles. Set out on guided bushwalks with specialist rangers and trackers. Or unwind in the wellness centre with a range of massages and treatments.
