The Teardrop of the Indian Ocean

Shaped like a teardrop falling off the south-eastern toe of India, Sri Lanka was once described by Marco Polo as ‘the finest island of its size in all the world’. Like a finely cut diamond, it is a rare and compact jewel that shines from its many facets: a land rich in cultural treasures with ancient cities still echoing their might and majesty. Wildlife parks teem with flora and fauna; breathtaking vistas are around every corner, and stunning beaches are just perfect to dance though the dazzling white surf. Not to mention the fragrant yet fiery cuisine and the smiling people who are proud to share their homeland.

Under British rule the island was known as Ceylon, a name synonymous with tea, and no tour would be complete without a visit to the spectacular hill country around Kandy, with its famous undulating tea plantations. To appreciate the diverse landscapes of the island nation, why not consider some travel by rail? The journey between the capital, Colombo, and Kandy in particular, is considered one of the most scenic train trips in Asia.

Sara’s personal highlights:

Walking and bathing with the ‘ellies’

Visiting the Elephant Freedom Project in Kegalle – a family run ethical sanctuary for ex working /rescued elephants -no rides allowed just a 2 hour walk with the elephants followed by them bathing in the local river.

Wildlife encounters

Staying at Leopards Trail tented accommodation in the Yala National Park and spotting many elephants and leopards during our Jeep safari trips out.

Leviathans of the ocean

Sri Lanka has become one of the most successful places to see both blue and sperm whales, which can be found off the island’s southern coast.

Spicing up the holiday!

Learning to cook Sri Lankan curries with the chef at Rosyth Estate House, a former Colonial Planters tea and rubber estate.

A ‘Bucket List’ train journey

Taking the Scenic Train journey through the Hill Country crossing the Nine Arch Bridge  – on the bucket list for most travellers to Sri Lanka.
